NYU Langone Ambulatory Care

222 E 41st St, New York, NY

This 25 story fit-out of an existing building in midtown Manhattan brings together over a dozen unique faculty group practices. The project includes a Radiology/MRI Suite and Plastics OR, offering the surrounding community a collective center for outpatient care.

As a gut renovation of a previous law office, the team was tasked with creating a new design language for the building through an airy, balanced palette. The multi-phased design construction also provided a unique challenge - since the first phase opening in 2018, the building has remained fully occupied and functional as subsequent phases and construction commence.

Inspired by the patterning and repetition of the midtown skyline, the team created a back-lit wood feature wall to orient and guide the patient from the elevator lobby into the reception area.

The needs of a bustling outpatient center sparked our planning and design objectives by emphasizing views to the outside and access to daylight throughout all public spaces and clinical corridors.

The program requirements challenged our team to leverage the introduction of daylight into typically buried interior spaces, such as MRI rooms, laboratories, and operating rooms. We took this one step further, taking full advantage of ample exterior transparency by using views to the outside as the basis for simple, efficient way-finding
